Walmadany...The People.... above Senior Law Boss Phillip Roe
The Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr people call Walmadany home.Their ancestors have used the area for thousands of years, shell middens can be seen everywhere and there are many large sand dunes and special areas that are of great cultral significance and part of heritage and lore. Walmadany is named after a powerful leader who fought to protect his people and land. Walmadany was there to meet anyone who threatened this special place, he and his people called home all the way into the begining of the 20th century.
Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr still practise Culture, Lore and Heritage today. I can not discuss the traditions here on this page as a sign of respect to Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr Lore, but the Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr people share a special event held every year, The Lurujarri Trail. It stretches from Minyirr to Minarriny, it's a spectacular beautiful walk over 10 days. Senior Law Bosses like Phillip Roe, Ronnie Roe and Richard Hunter share their historical local knowledge and traditional craftsmanship. Brilliant traditional stories sharing their culture, heritage and lore. Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr have a long proud indigenous heritage which they are always glad to share. Walmadany is also home of the world's rarest dinosaur trackways, some of the largest and rarest prints are found here. People are welcome to look, camp and fish. Many Broome community members and tourists come regularly and as long as you clean up and be respectful staying out of special dune areas you will be most welcome. Often community members run weed and rubbish removal days and they always welcome you to join in, looks hard but it's fun and a great way to get to know everyone...
